Tesla’s Family

Milutin Tesla was Nikola’s father. He was a priest at the Serbian Orthodox church, where Tesla and his family lived close by. Unfortunately since they were a poor family in a poor village Tesla’s father was badly paid, and they were even lucky enough to have a home. Georgina Mandic was Tesla’s mother. Georgina wasn’t as special as the rest of the Tesla family. Tesla was the second son of Milutin Tesla and Georgina Mandic because Dane was the first son of the family; he was possibly the parents’ favorite family genius. Unfortunately he died in a horse riding accident, now this was a horrible impact on the life of Tesla and his family.

Tesla had three, kind smart, sisters, who doted young Nikola, named Milka, Marcia, and Angelina Tesla. Nikola, his father, and his three sisters were all greatly gifted with a phenomenal memory. His mother wasn’t gifted with a phenomenal memory or anything that fancy, her side of the family included several landowners plus several inventors. Also she had wealthy uncles which most of them were either clergy or military men.

The wealthy uncles included Nikolia Mandic; His Eminence the Archbishop of Sarajevo and Metropolitan of the Serbian Orthodox Church in Bosnia; Uncle Pajo, a general-staff colonel in the Imperial Austro-Hungarian army, and finally Uncle Trifum, a well known hotelier and landowner. Later on in Nikola’s life these three men would help Nikola, with money, to get to America. Tesla began to study his mother, who was gifted with inventing, develop many appliances, that helped her around the house, such as a mechanical eggbeater, she also invented a tool to help her with the supervision of farm work. She would also memorize the musical Serbian poetry and then recited it to her children.

Later on Tesla’s father became a writer and poet who signed his articles “Man of Justice”. After his father got the new job, he got a new library in which Nikola read. But his father disapproved Nikola using a candle at night because he is afraid that Nikola would lose his vision from the light, so he took the candles away from Nikola. Nikola didn’t want to stop reading because of the light being taken away so he made his own personal candle out of scraps of wax, and before going to bed he read with the candle, but he put bed sheets under the door so they can’t see the light coming from the room.
